Painting of a backstreet of Ercolano, the bustling, little town which surrounds the Roman ruins of Herculaneum, squeezed between the threatening slopes of Mount Vesuvius and the azure crescent of the Bay of Naples. Ercolano is an fascinating and slightly intimidating warren of shady alleyways, little market squares, and crumbling apartments, offering a modern insight to the sights and sounds absent from Herculaneum.
